Writers Workshop

I finally get to Mama Kats Writers Workshop. I'm a bit late this week, but I really wanted to do this one.

1) If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

This is such a no brainer for me and I am so excited to write about it. I want to go to America. AGAIN. You see, I had one of the best times of my life, when I toured the USA 13 years ago. Besides the birth of my kids and my wedding day, this holiday is up there with the best.

I had always been fascinated with America. You see, here in Australia we see alot of movies and tv shows from there and I thought to myself "I wonder if America is really like this". Is there really a Melrose Place, does crime really happen in the suburbs? But that's not the only thing I was interested in. I wanted to see the cities, the towns, meet the people, see the big things and ride Route 66. I wanted it all.

I booked my trip 12 months in advance. And I was going alone. The Hubbster didn't want to go and I was not missing this opportunity as we were not yet married with kids. I saved, I worked two jobs, and studied the holiday brochures for a year. The time came and I nearly didn't go. The Hubbster drove me to the airport and I had a choice to turn around and go home again, or walk through the door alone on a big adventure, not knowing what was in store for me, and as an unseasoned traveller, I was terrified. The bravado I had showed when I booked the trip was no where to be seen.

I did walk through the door and I can still to this day remember how nervous but amazingly excited I felt. I immediately met a girl who I was to room in with on the tour we were doing, and when we arrived in LA we met 4 guys from Sydney who were also doing the tour. So I was not going to be alone.

I had the best time of my life. I loved it all. I did a bus tour seeing the touristy things crossing the country from west to east. I then met a friend who I had been writing to for the past 12 months and she took me in and showed me the "real America". She lived in Missouri. We drove to Tennessee and I met her sister and I still write to them.

I am so glad I saw two sides of this country. The touristy must sees and the real people. Who were, might I say, quite fascinated with me as my accent was surprising to some.

America did not disapoint. I want to visit again. It will be later rather than sooner, but that's okay. I have to go back and see more and probably visit the places I saw before, with kids in tow perhaps. I don't care, the USA is calling me.

And I did get to ride Route 66, something my 6 year old son is shocked about, because apparently route 66 only appears in the movie Cars...

I went to the States in 1991. It was my first overseas trip and the beginning of a two year backpacking holiday/working trip. I spent two months in the States from the west to the east coast and a bit inbetween. I really enjoyed it.
