Chook House Palace

What a beautiful Autumn day!

I've been down at the chicken house, or as us Aussies like to call it "the chook house". I wanted to tidy up and cut back alot of overgrown plants inside, because I'm sure the chooks can't find each other!

When we moved to the farm 4 years ago, this amazing chicken house complete with occupants was part of the deal. We have no idea how old the hens and roosters were, and we have lost some to old age along the way.

Except for the time we introduced the neighbours hen, named Ellen who happened to be a rooster, who had a fight with our rooster who subsequently died from his war wounds.

Sorry where was I?  Oh right!

So our hens have given us alot of eggs during the years, but now they are happy to live out their lives in the sunshine in their chook house palace.

Footnote:- There is a particular skirt that I love which is a burnt orange colour. The chickens hate it. Everytime I wear it, they peck me.

I'm now using it as a cleaning cloth.

Wow. You weren't kidding about the jungle out the back! They probably don't know what to do with all of that space now. :)

I want chickens. Just a couple.

We had a few growing up. All with names of course. And a rooster named George. Poor George. Really, we mostly called him Poor George.

You will love them, so will the kids. We had one called Antonio. Or was that a guinea fowl? I can't recall.

He was named after Antonio Banderas *swoon*.

We have lots of room! We don't get any eggs anymore so they are just living their happy little lives x

We are yet to build Chateau la'chook - that one really does look like a palace. So satisfying cleaning up something that has been annoying isn't it.

That's the biggest and best chook house I've ever seen!
Will you be putting newer, younger chooks in? With that amount of free ranging the eggs should be fantastic.

I think once these chookies pass, I'll get some more...we then may start getting eggs again.

I'll let these guys live out their life in the sunshine xo

Looks great, definitely more luxurious than the chook yard our poor chooks have!

Hope they will keep warm without all the plants as the weather cools.
We had chooks years back and the fresh eggs were wonderful and the chook poo used to sit in a bucket with a heavy slab on top and MOH would take some out and add water and it did wonders for the vegie garden.
A man has built a horrible huge grey house right at our back fence (not sure how he got permission) and now where out chook house is would be too close to him.
We had names for our chooks and when they got too old to lay we would take them to a small farm in an outer suburb who had elderly chooks running free. I guess they got the odd egg from them and we knew the old chooks had a good home. I could never eat a chook that I had cuddled or know well so none of ours ever graced our dinner table.
Hope you do get some new ones when these pass on to their eternal chook pen.
