Snakes Alive!!

Yesterday I took the kids to the Qld Reptile Expo.

As if we need to see any more snakes *snort*.

Anyway, it was really really good! The kids (and I) got to hold various snakes, both big and small and the strangest thing said during the day was...

"Mum, I'm just going to hold the crocodile"...

"Okay love, have fun".......

Who'd have thought!

There was an excellent show and display by a professional snake man, who thrilled us with his extremely dangerous (and big) snakes.

He talked about each one, and what to do in the event of a snakebite.

We didn't cuddle Mr Eastern Brown, Mr Coastal Tiapan or Mrs Death Adder, but we did make friends with some cuties below......

And it was a very surreal feeling to have a 6 foot python around my shoulders like a scarf !

Jungle Python

Stimson's Python

4 year old crocodile, I felt a little sorry for this guy, being handled all day.

The focus was on Education, Relocation and Conservation.

Educate ourselves to know what to do in the event of a snakebite, and how to lessen the risks.

Relocate a snake by having the snake catchers name and number on hand to come and remove the pesky snake..not all of them are out to get you.

Conservation....snakes are a part of our ecosystem and are here to stay.

Many make attractive pets, believe it or not.

I just need to walk down the back paddock, I'm sure I'd find one!

Oh my goodness, brave kiddo's! Love the pics, such a great experience for them to get up close and personal and learn more about these reptiles.
The little croc is cute, poor thing having his mouth taped shut... for obvious reasons though of course.

The Croc looks cool, but his 'muzzle' doesn't... I know what I say -.-

We used to live in a snaky area. We saw more than our share of copperheads and a few pygmy rattlers. The non poisonous snakes didn't seem to be as numerous.
But, I agree, snakes can be good pets and they do help cut down on rodents!
It looks like the program was really good!

It's so good to have the snake education, I was bitten by a brown not so long ago , I was very lucky to have only Been given a dry warning bite but it all happened so quick A overnight stay at hospital, now wearing gumboots at all times , It could have ended so much worse x

Kris, oh no, I'm glad you recovered from that snake bite!

Education is certainly the key!!

I remember Miss 8's kinder had someone similar come by for an incursion. Let's just say, I was darn glad that I wasn't on duty that day!

I want a photo of Mrs Death Adder (shivers). I don't mind snakes usually. That yellow one is sooo pretty!

We did the reptile show at our local show last year. Samuel spent a good amount of time behind the handler's back trying to let the baby croc (who was walking around free within it's caged area) out. He actually managed to unhook the gate while I was helping Alexander cuddle the python!

I laughed. Quietly. Then discreetly grabbed my children and bolted....

They are actually quite beautiful..and placid. I think they get a bad wrap to be honest!

I shudder just looking at those photos!

I took my class of 7 year olds on camp last year and they all eagerly held a snake or two. I had to be a good role model and join in to, but I just wanted to run LOL

My fear of snakes is so intense that I will admit I scrolled through your pics very very quickly!
On a zoo excursion with kinder a couple of years ago they put a snake around my daughters neck. I nearly passed out and vomited at the same time. eeeeek!!!

I think we are getting more used to them living out of town...I'd prefer them not to be around me of course lol
