Bright Lights of the City

There's no place like home.

As we drove along the dusty track leading to our shed, I was so happy to be back where I belong.

My son (aged 9) and I had spent four days in Brisbane, in the city, in the bigsmoke.

We arrived early Monday morning and had a few days free to explore and to shop. We were staying in a motel directly across from the Myer shopping centre..what a great location to be in.

We rode every glass elevator and escalator we could find, on our way to the toy sale. My son was in heaven in the Lego isle!

My little country farm chick was amazed by the people, the buildings, and the busyness of it all.

Many times I had to remind him to stay close, to not wander away, because we were in the city.

How amazed he was by it all, so foreign to a little boy who belongs in the country.

We were upgraded to a two bedroom apartment on the 19th floor of the motel, and our view was superb. The lights of Brisbane shimmered against the raindrops that fell.

At dinnertime we decided to go for a walk along the Queen Street Mall....hand in hand my little man and I strolled along, window shopping and chatting.

I loved his excitement and how this was all so new to him.

We passed a homeless lady, who had set up along a bench, ready for the cold night. I watched my son, how he looked at her with confusion, and compassion.

We passed an adult club, where a young girl in a tight red dress, with a thigh high split stood at the entrance and watched us as we walked by. I wondered how old she was, and who she was.

I wanted to glance back, but I didn't want to stare.

We headed back to our apartment, and snuggled in for the night, while the rain fell outside.

We wore the complimentary white bath robes and Mr C decided that being a ninja was the way to go.  He was so elusive I was lucky to even have these photos of him!

Our few days together, just the two of us was wonderful.  I loved seeing his joy on his first plane ride, and going out to dinner to a fancy pants restaurant where I proceeded to spill an entire jug of iced water across the table.

"Oh mum, you're so embarrassing" he said.

I guess I am, but his giggles were worth it x

Looks like you had a great time! Love the pictures too!

There are quite a few homeless people here these days. It is so sad to see, especially at this time of year when it's so cold outside.

Thanks for sharing your photos and I'm so glad to hear that my son isn't the only one who spills drinks everywhere he goes!

Best wishes,
Natasha

Great to read of a country boy's perspective of the city. We only have our city people's view of the city ;) But just about every boy loves Lego, right?

Just about to take a little vacation with my 11 year old daughter. It's always so fun to do that. Last year we stayed at such a strange hotel that we spent a good couple of hours taking photographs in the lobby, on the different floors, upside down, etc. The architecture lent itself to that and boy was it fun. Thanks for you post. Great photos.
