Organise My Mud Room

You may remember my recent post about the one word I've chosen to represent this year.

Organise.

A shiny new word with endless possibilities!  I'm happy to say that I'm already embracing the word and I'm feeling quite excited about it!

Over the weekend I dusted off the old computer desk and dragged it from the shed to the house, and it fitted perfectly in our mud room.  What's a mud room you ask?

Many Suburban American houses have a mud room, a casual, generally secondary entryway intended as an area to remove and store footwear, outerwear, and wet clothing before entering the main house. As well as providing storage space, a mud room serves to increase the cleanliness of a house proper.

A house proper!  I like it!

Our mud room is a small room we have at the top of the stairs, leading from our garage.  At one end of the room is the laundry and at the other end is a doorway, which doesn't actually have a door, rather some country fretwork, leading into the dining room and the main area of the house.

This room is perfect for our computer desk and work station, for a notice board to hold our calendars, school reminders, bills to be paid, invitations, sporting notes and general crap, that until now, sat in disarray on a bench in the pantry.

Opposite the computer desk we will have an area with hooks and space for school bags, coats and hats and boots, and each child (and grown up!) will have their own place to store bits and pieces to stay organised!

I love this room, and it's starting to take shape.  Now to find some wall hooks......

I love that you have this extra space. Ours is also dumped on the kitchen bench. When it reaches a certain height it needs to be sorted. Can't wait to see the rest when you get it sorted. :)

What a great idea. Over the years I've tired to have special places of different items but with a husband like mine....no chance. He just wants things where he wants them and that's that.
A good example for this morning. He has a stiff neck and wanted a pain killer. "Can't find the Panadol" said he. "They are in with all the other medicines in that top drawer" said I. "Oh" said he "I thought they should be in the bathroom" which is where he happened to be holding his glass of water!!!! Nevertheless, I still love him muchly,
I am trying to follow your lead and am more organised this year than in previous years, mainly in ridding our house of much unwanted clutter. I think I would dearly love to move into a new home and start from scratch but a bit late for me unfortunately.

Michelle, my kitchen bench was overloaded, it was driving me crazy!!! I can't think with stuff everywhere lol xo

Mimsie, I'm hearing you about the panadol, we can never find ours!! I'm also trying to get rid of clutter, and make things simple xo

I love the idea of a mud room! and I'd love to have one. a place to store the granny trolley and the rubber boots etc. I remember old farmhouses we lived in had them, the back door opened directly onto the mud room, which then lead into either a laundry or a lobby. On houses with wrap around verandahs, the back porch became the "mud room", with boots piled up by the door. Perhaps we should write to today's architects and house planners and suggest they try adding one.
