America '13 Chicago

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Have more accurate words ever been spoken, or misquoted? As I sit on my sunny verandah, watching the kids ride their motorbikes, it's hard to believe just a few days ago the landscape looked and felt very different.

I'm back on the farm, back to the drudgery of housework, school lunches and not being in America.  Let's face it, we all need a holiday once in a while to recharge, to change up our routine, and to look forward to something.  It's just the coming back and fitting into the old routine which is tedious.

Saying that, I missed my family, and I was so happy to see them.  I'm sure the kids had grown taller, and the house was clean and organised so thank you Hubbster for that one!

So about my holiday, let's begin with Episode One - Chicago.........

I arrived at the Sheraton, with a genuine plea for reception to give me a room on a high floor with a view, and they certainly delivered.  My room was on the 32nd floor with an amazing view of Navy Pier, a gorgeous Chicago skyline, and Lake Michigan which I mistook for the Atlantic Ocean geography fail.

Lake Michigan is one of the five freshwater Great Lakes, and the only one completely within the United States.  They are big.  Very big.  See above geography fail.

I had three days to myself before Blogher13 began, so I wanted to see as much of Chicago as I could.  I started with an architectural river cruise along the Chicago River which runs through the city, and this was relaxing as well as informative as I garnered a new appreciation of how a city is put together.  Our tour guide explained the history of each skyscraper and it was so interesting as I saw the beauty in each steel and concrete innovation.

I loved this.

After the cruise, I strolled down Michigan Avenue and window shopped along The Magnificent Mile.  I wandered into Victoria's Secret, purely for the experience and friends, I beg of you, if you are ever in Chicago do not go in there.

It was like stepping into this weird twilight zone, where you get yourself deeper and deeper and just can't get out. I was led into this dark corridor leading to the fitting rooms, with black doors and intricate painted scrolls on the walls.  My personal attendant fitted me into 16 different bras, from the bedazzled to the silky black, and after 2 hours I emerged with only the bra I was wearing, along with 6 new cotton hipsters in a fancy bag and an appetite!

Chicago is beautiful. So clean, and sunny and the riverwalk is divine. I remember sitting at a little outdoor cafe just watching the boats on the water, and people doing their thing, thinking how lucky I was to be in this exact moment in time.

Over the next two days I visited Willis Tower, The Adler Planetarium, The John Hancock Observatory and Navy Pier.  As I was by myself, I had time to soak up each moment within my own time frame. I dipped my hands in Lake Michigan as I strolled along the bank, and had a picnic overlooking the water with the Chicago Skyline in perfect view.

All the time feeling so grateful to be in a city I had dreamed of visiting for so long. And one that I long to go back to.

Red, White and Blue

17 days.

How did that happen.

17 days and it's wheels up and I"m heading to the U S of A!

I"m off to Blogher13 and I'm excited and overwhelmed, I haven't packed and I have a To Do list that doesn't seem to be getting any shorter.

I can hardly believe that I'm going,   It's not just the conference that I'm excited about, but the whole experience of travelling,  and of visiting my beloved America again, after 16 long years.

My friends know that I'm obsessed by two things, the colour green, and America!  Not a day has gone by since the first time I visited this amazing country, that I haven't thought of, or been reminded of my first overseas holiday, all those years ago.

I was a wide eyed, twenty something, first time traveller, and I have such fond memories of the month I travelled through America.  My life changed after that, it really did, because I realised there was so much to see in the world, so many people to meet, and memories that will stay with me forever.

So now I'm going back.  I'm older now, and married with children. I'm still confident in what I'm doing, and it doesn't worry me that I'm going alone.

And that's the thing.  I won't be alone.  I"ve already connected with many bloggers online from America, Australia and a lovely girl from France (hi Jennie!).  As Virginia wrote today "we are hanging out now, we are socializing so we have a frame of reference when we meet in person.  We have icebreakers".

So when I arrive in Chicago, I'll have friends waiting for me, and it will be amazing.

Happy 4th of July to my new friends, and to a country that holds my heart so dear.

Why I Do What I Do

After a relaxing and restful sleep last night, I woke, yawned, rolled over and was confronted by Blue Angry Bird staring across at me.

I could have sworn I went to bed with The Hubbster last night.  But there was Blue Angry Bird perched on the pillow!  Of course I took a photo and thought about how I could incorporate him into a blog post!

I would categorize this mornings' event as pertaining to the blogger label of "silly" or "funny". It doesn't really belong to "country" or "farm" or "babies" or "books".

I looked across at my labels to see a vast array of subjects that I write about.  Everything from country of course, to travel, kids, my house, movies and family.

Which has got me thinking, what is my blog really about?  What is my "niche". Do I have a certain focus?  Who reads my blog?  Why do people read my blog?

I initially started writing to document our journey from suburbia to living on a farm, and in a shed, and to have a written progress report on owner building our house.

As I've always been a bit of an over sharer, I found myself writing about other things that interested me.  And I really enjoyed it!

I loved the freedom to express myself, the challenge to keep it real, and the connections I was starting to make with others who blog.  There was something about blogging that made me want to tell it how it is, to not cover my stories in fairy floss to make them acceptable to others.

And four years later, I'm still doing it!

I don't particularly have a niche.  I don't monetise my blog, I don't do giveaways or reviews, but I have the utmost admiration for those who do.  I very rarely post photos of my children, but I write about them alot.

I write about my day, my farm, my life, and what worries me, the heartbreak I've felt over this and this, and the joy I have here.

And I think it works....for me....I hope it works for you too.

Thank you for reading my blog.  I am very grateful and although I'm not giving away ponies, I hope you can still take something away each time you visit!

Blog Love

There's nothing I love better than sitting with a cup of Irish Breakfast tea, possibly a chocolate biscuit or two, and a list of blogs to read.

I love blogs about design and decorating, home improvement, home renovation and anything country of course!

There is so much to look at online, but I have a few favourites that I'd love to share with you today.

Fun and VJs

Lots of fun, decorating and design, with plenty of humour thrown in.  Just what I like.

And because this family is renovating their Queenslander,

I am especially drawn to it, as we are building our own modern Queenslander.  We can all appreciate the beauty of Vertical Join Wall Lining!

Desire Empire I've only recently discovered this blog and there is much to love!

Full of style and beautiful photos, Carolyn is passionate about what she does and it shows.

Beachy pics, gorgeous flowers and table settings...it's all so delicious!

A Country Farmhouse Well the name says it all..you can see why I adore this blog!

Classically beautiful to look at, with the most gorgeous photos of their country house.

I love reading about Trina and sharing her passion for old houses and a simple but healthy life.

The House That A-M Built Kitchens, porches, gorgeous little nooks to sit and read, and a wonderful online shop featuring lighting that I just adore!

I am such a visual person, and I can sit with my cup of tea and just gaze at the images on this blog, and dream.....and be inspired.

I'd love you to check out these blogs and fall in love with them as I have done.

Do YOU have any favourites you'd care to share??

Farmers Wifey turns THREE!

I realised today, at 3.15pm, that I've been blogging for exactly 3 years!

Happy Birthday Farmers Wifey Blog!

I'm totally not organised for this milestone, but I'm celebrating tonight because my blog is so important to me.

Bloggers, I know you understand!

When I wrote that very first post, I didn't realise how obsessed I would become about writing, commenting and following.

I didn't realise how many friends I would make, and how much I would love reading about their lives.

I originally started this blog to document our journey from suburbia to a shed on a farm.

My blog has become so much more than that.

It is evolving every single day.  I'm not sure where it is going, but I am so thankful that I have you, my friends, along for the ride.

Thank You x

Vote for Wifey

You may or may not remember a little competition Farmers Wifey participated in last year....the Circle of Moms Top 25 Funny Moms.

You may also remember that Farmers Wifey finished....26 out of 25....oh the humanity!

Well, I'm at it again.  I'd love your votes...and I'd love you to vote everyday.

Yes I'm asking/pleading and that's okay.  Because I may or may not send you a car.

But you'll always have my appreciation x

Here's the link....go forth and vote!

Do you use this IPhone application and do you have some helpful hints for me?

A Milestone for me

My little blog celebrated a milestone today.

One hundred thousand pageviews!

Or 100 000!

That's alot of zeros and I appreciate every single one of them ♥

I'm not a blogging superstar, although I know a few and they all awesome, but I love the way my little piece of the World Wide Web has grown and the direction it is heading.

Thank you for supporting me by following and commenting, and giving me the confidence to write and to be honest.

I don't even have a present for you to show my thanks, but I can tell you this:-

My friends, you have been with me through the good times and the bad.

We have shared some happy moments and I've even been known to be a little controversial.

I can be funny and actually quite creative.

Most of the time, though, I just like to be a little bit silly.

But most of all, I am honest.

Without YOU, my blog wouldn't be what it is.....I love you ♥
